As an added benefit to its Boston Headquarters staff, John Hancock opened a state-of-the-art child care center in the lower two stories of an existing building a half block from their signature location at the Hancock Tower, the tallest building in New England. It included two fenced-in outdoor play areas that provided complete security for the children. The interior garden was placed in an otherwise unusable space under a stairwell where ceiling heights were too low for adults but were acceptable for the young children "visiting" the garden. The garden contained changes in elevation, a waterfall and stream-bed made of custom-designed fiberglass "rocks", a bluestone walkway system, a 16' tall preserved palm tree, and live shrubs and ground covers.
